Thesis writing bootcamps (GSSE registration)

Please note that this registration is only for GSSE PhD candidates.

  • Organiser: Dean of Graduate Studies with the UG Graduate Schools (GSSE, GSMS, Federation of Graduate Schools Social Sciences and Humanities)
  • Coach: NFW Coaching Nicolien Wieringa
  • Participants (GSSE): Max 5 / bootcamp

The target audience is PhD candidates already or almost out of contract, who have considerable amounts of their thesis ready, and need dedicated writing time to finish the last parts. The individual support/coaching is to talk about their writing process, motivational aspects, agreements made with their supervisors, and, if relevant, choices to be made to limit the amount of work to finish their thesis.

IMPORTANT! Funding

Before registering for the bootcamp, please contact the PhD Coordinator of your institute to discuss the funding. GSSE recommends that the costs of the bootcamp (600e/participant for an onsite bootcamp; 400e/participant for an online bootcamp) are shared between the candidate (ITB, if any left), the Research Institute, and GSSE (third each).

Dates and location for the upcoming bootcamps:

  • April/May 2025 bootcamp: Three weekends, 26-27 April, 10-11 May, 24-25 May (Saturday 9-18; Sunday 9-17). The bootcamp is organised in Groningen. The travel, accommodation, or lunch is not provided by UG.
  • September/October 2025 bootcamp (online via Microsoft Teams): 13-14 September, 27-28 September, 18-19 October (9:00-17:00).

Please note that the September/October 2025 online bootcamp is primarily reserved for those PhD candidates who do not live in or who cannot regularly come to Groningen.

Programme

  • The bootcamp consists of primarily individual thesis writing and support by the coach. The first weekend starts with a 1h kick-off introduction.
  • Each bootcamp day includes a 1h lunch break.
  • During the last bootcamp weekend it is possible to schedule a group meeting (max. 1 hour) to share individual tips and tricks how to maintain writing pace until the thesis is ready.

Preparation

All participants are requested to send the coach the some information about their thesis progress and status before the bootcamp starts. You will receive an email from the coach prior to the bootcamp about this.
