Scientific writing: Intermediate

Please note that the October and January courses are onsite and the May course is online.

This course replaces the course that was previously called "English language support 3: Fundamentals of academic writing".

Course description:

You’re capable of writing accurately, but somehow your writing doesn’t flow well. Do you feel that it could be improved but don’t know how? This course focuses on organising your texts to produce clear writing which create value for your reader. We’ll discuss paragraphing, organisational flow, and redundancy. We’ll also work on identifying your reader, and discuss how we can provide them with several great reasons as to why they should read your work.

Learning goals:

  • Organise written content to enhance clarity and readability, focusing on principles of paragraphing, logical flow, and the elimination of redundancy to create cohesive and structured scientific texts.
  • Craft scientific texts that offer substantial value to readers by effectively communicating complex ideas in an accessible manner.

Format:

The course lasts for 3 weeks (1 session each week, 2.5h per session, from 9:30 to 12:00).

  • October course dates: 10th, 17th, 24th October (onsite)
  • January course dates: 16th, 23rd, 30th January (onsite)
  • May course dates: 9th, 16th, 23rd May (online)

Prerequisites and alternative courses:

To attend this course, your English skills should be at least at the B2 level. Moreover, you should have a basic understanding of how English sentence structure works. If you don't fulfil these prerequisites, you should consider taking the course Scientific writing: Basics. If you feel you have already achieved the learning goals of this course, you can consider taking the course Scientific writing: Advanced.

Please note that if you're taking Writing the Introductory Essay or Writing a Scientific Article, you should not take this course at the same time, as it includes some overlapping material.

Workload:

  • 7.5 class hours, 3 self-study hours.
